RE: Satellite in Trailer

Someone posted a modification of the amplifier switchbox plate a while back... Maybe one of our other members can reference that link or you could do a search for it... Les

RE: water transfer pump

I used to use the pump shown for transferring water... IIRC it draws about 5 amps or so and around 7.5 amps when starting so the Honda may not be the better choice... I ran mine off my truck battery and the fact that it moves about 3 gallons per minute was a mere 10 minutes to refill the 30 gallon fresh tank on the trailer... Here's the link for the pump from Northern Tool... http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_16832_16832 http://www.northerntool.com/images/product/images/109731_lg.gif Les

RE: I connected the battery wrong....

Yeah, check the main fuses coming from the battery... Chances are everything is OK after fuse replacement - we've all done it - don't feel too bad :W Les

RE: winterization help

I would drain the water lines with the low point drains first, then drain HW tank and bypass the HW tank... Then pump anti freeze throughout the lines and don't forget the outside shower and city water entry... REMEMBER to relieve pressure by opening a faucet with the pump off before pushing the check valve in on the city water entry or you'll be replacing that assembly :( Then add a cup or two of antifreeze to all P-traps as said above and finally drain black, gray, and fresh water tanks to remove excess water... Blowing out the lines with compressed air is used by some folks but there is always the chance you won't remove all the water and it could collect in a low point of a water line and freeze and damage the line... Water lines and their routing are different from RV to RV and you never know if there is a low point that you can't see... The compressed air technique works for some folks but I have always used anti freeze as temps here in the Mid West area of the country can easily go to 20 blow zero or colder... I have never had any damage to lines using antifreeze in the 25+ years I have been winterizing my RV's this way and that would be my recommended method of winterizing... FWIW & IMO, your always taking a chance using just compressed air... Les

RE: I'm sitting in the dark and need your help!

If you want a simple way to do it, just hook a 12 volt automotive trouble light across the terminals... If the light is bright, you have 12+ volts - if no light, the converter DC section is shot and needs work or replacement... According to the link JJ provided, you are already on step 3 after checking the 30A fuses... If the converter has good AC input voltage, chances are the rectifier/filtering section has issues and needs work or replacement... Les

RE: SUV Hauling

Let me just add to all the comments here pro and con that a shorter wheelbase vehicle may tow a given trailer length without issue UNTIL there is a problem... The problem could manifest itself as an avoidance maneuver, emergency braking/swerving maneuver, etc...That is where the longer wheelbase vehicle will pay off... Those towing lighter, shorter trailers, particularly with heavier, longer wheelbase tow vehicles will be less prone to having problems... Those towing heavier, longer trailers, particularly with shorter wheelbase, lighter tow vehicles will be more prone to having problems... Yeah, I know there are a lot of people that will say "I've towed for years and never had a problem with this setup"... Most who tow won't have any issues, but some will, and when you do have an issue, an emergency stop, an emergency swerve, or a similar circumstance, that is where the longer wheelbase, larger, heavier, tow vehicle will pay off... The wheelbase to trailer length rule has been argued many, many times as to it's worth, particularly since the advent of SUV's... It is not a hard fast rule but a "guideline" and a guideline that has worked well for many years... It still has validity and is a good "guideline" to keep in mind... I'm not going to engage in, or encourage an argument regarding wheelbase to trailer length, my mind is already made up based on decades of experience towing with many, many different setups, but it has long been a proven fact that a longer wheelbase vehicle is more stable than a shorter wheelbase vehicle when towing trailers, particularly travel trailers with their high profile and large side "sail area"... My comments FWTW - take'em or leave'em... Les

RE: Tire Wear Pattern-Tandem Axle TT (Pic's) Where to look next

Here ya go John - sorry it took so long - been a bit busy with some other projects... Pictures #1 & @2 are of the street side (port side) and will show tire scrubbing on the extreme left side of the tire - look particularly at the top of the tire and at the first large section of tread on the left side of the picture... You'll see the flat spots on the extreme left section of this part of the tread due to scrubbing... Picture #3 is the curb side (starboard side) of the TT showing almost identical wear patterns on the tire... These tires have around 6000 miles on them give or take a few miles... Tires are Goodyear Marathons - P225/75R15 LR D @ 65 PSI and TT weight is around #9400 give or take a few pounds depending on loading Les http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/Tire%20Pictures/Tire2.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/Tire%20Pictures/Tire1.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b191/nomad27/Tire%20Pictures/Tire3.jpg

RE: when to sanitize tanks

Every once in a while I'll run a bleach solution like I use for sanitizing thru my gray and black tanks... Why??? It kills off all the bacteria in the tanks which can cause odor... I don't say it right or wrong to do this, it's just what I do and it works for me... Actually, with all the paranoia I see on the forums with campers getting out their bleach bottles and spraying down everything from water spigots to sewer hoses I'm kinda surprised more people don't do this... We all know that gray tanks can often smell worse than blacks tanks and that is being caused by decaying bacteria in the tank... A plain water flush will NOT kill that bacteria so a bleach solution flush isn't necessarily a bad idea... BTW - I'll do the flushes at the beginning of the season and whenever odor or fresh water tanks dictate that it needs it... Les

RE: Vent Fan Recommendations

Maxx-Air Turbo Maxx is nice but kind of pricy compared to the Fan-Tastic... I remember Barney's Turbo-Maxx and it was quiet - "ya pays your money and takes your choice" :W If you check the specs for both, you'll see that the Turbo-Maxx moves a bit more air than the Fan-Tastic but that is at the cost of additional current draw... Turbo-Maxx does not give noise specs for it's fans but I'll attest to the fact that they are a bit quieter... Link to RV Wholesalers and Turbo Maxx Les

What JJ said !! I have 2 Fan-Tastic Create-A-Breeze units in mine... One in the living room, one in the bathroom... They do an exellent job and you just don't find customer service like you do with Fan-Tastic - they are second to none :B Creat-A-Breeze 8000 Les

RE: Tire Wear Pattern-Tandem Axle TT (Pic's) Where to look next

I'd still check into the axles John... The wear pattern we are seeing really looks like an axle(s) are out of camber... I have some pretty sharp turns as well when docking my TT and the wear pattern from scrubbing the tires does not look like that - it's more of a cupping pattern along the outter portion of the tire tread... If I get a chance today I will snap some photos so you can see what I am talking about... Les BTW - I LOVE that jack with the scale built in - much better than my ShurLine scale...

RE: Tornado install

Not being obtuse at all - now you know that they are offered in two different versions :W ... Yeah, it really doesn't make much sense to offer the Tornado without the hose and valve and mount... I would take it back as you suggest your going to do and ask for the other version of this device... BTW, it does a fine job of keeping the black tank cleaned when used on a regular basis... Les

RE: Tire Wear Pattern-Tandem Axle TT (Pic's) Where to look next

Yeah John - let's get busy and replace those worn nylon bushings - your lagging seriously behind Barney and I :W :W :B ... Seriously though, in the last picture is that a crack at the bead weld on the hanger or is it just an optical illusion :H Generally tire wear such as that indicates improperly pitched (bent) or bent/damaged axles... Since we know you are precise on weights and such the only thing I can think of is what JJ mentioned - worn/egg shaped shackles/idlers or axles... What is the axle rating stamped on the axle - they are Alco right??? As I recall you said at Eby Pines that you didn't have dexter axles and that was an issues with the HD/EZ-Flex idlers and such... BTW - I assume you looked at the tires real good when you purchased right :H It might be time to send your documentation to Alco and talk with them :R Les

RE: Leveling and stabilizing with slideout question

I do pretty much the same as Robbie... About 1/4 bubble high on the curbside and then deploy the slides... Not an unusual phenomenon considering that typically slides add #500-#700 of weight per slide... Les

Put it up for sale in the RV.Net Classifieds and/or Craig's List... Explain the scenario and be prepared to reduce your price from the original price you paid albeite the minimal usage as it has now become a "used" product... Les
